Measurement and types of shaft alignment When aligning, various measuring methods can be used to measure possible offset of the two shafts. Two different types of offset can be determined by the measurement: parallel offset and angular offset. If the measurement shows that the two shafts are not parallel to each other, this is an angular offset. If both axes of rotation are not at the same height, but do not have an angle of inclination between the joint, this is called a parallel offset. While the compensation of angular offset can be very complicated, it is possible to compensate for parallel offset by placing shims underneath. Compensation of parallel offset with shims Standard U-shaped shims are usually used for parallel shimming.
